Aussie App Sale
My good friend and ex-colleague from my time at Interzone Games, Anthony Sweet, contacted me late in 2009 with an idea: an end-of-year sale on Australian-made apps for the iPhone. Anthony handled the publicity side of the equation, contacting developers, organising discounts, promoting the site to blogs, review sites and so on. I was responsible for the visual side and making sure the site was functional, simple and attractive. The brief was – if you’ll pardon the pun, brief – a page full of icons that linked to the various apps on the App Store. All other decisions were left up to me.

I opted for a design that recalled the iconic colours of Australia: red earth and vivid blue sky, as well as spatterings and weathering to give some texture. The picture of Uluru features prominently: a bit cliche perhaps, but whatever helps to get the point across.

The logo for the sale itself was also left entirely up to my design, and I went with the first thing that popped into my head: the Australian coat of arms, with the central shield replaced by a generic silhouette of an iPhone. It was a hit and quickly found its way onto the pages of sites who were covering the sale as their own banner images for the articles.
I am pleased to report that the Aussie App Sale ran again in 2010 and was an immense success, with more than four times as many apps featured as in the previous year. Check out the Aussie App Sale by clicking here.
